TMC submits office-bearers list to EC, reaffirms Mamata as party chief
Amid an internal crisis marked by rebellion from a section of MPs and MLAs, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has submitted a fresh list of office-bearers and national working committee members to the Election Commission, asserting that Mamata Banerjee continues to head the party. Sources said the list, submitted on Tuesday and reflecting the party’s organisational structure “as on June 20, 2026,” seeks to establish the official hierarchy amid competing claims over control of the party.
According to the submission, Mamata remains the chairperson of the All India Trinamool Congress, with Subrata Bakshi as vice-president and Abhishek Banerjee as national general secretary and Lok Sabha leader. The list also names Derek O’Brien and Dola Sen as joint secretaries, while Subhasish Chakraborty has been designated as treasurer.
The national working committee includes key leaders such as Mamata, Bakshi, Abhishek, Derek, Dola, and Subhasish. Other members listed are Chandrima Bhattacharya, Amit Mitra, Rajesh Pati Tripathi, Asima Patra, Moloy Ghatak, Gautam Deb, Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, Bulu Chik Baraik, Mukul Sangma, Baiswanor Chattopadhyay, Birbaha Hansda, Kalyan Banerjee, Saugata Roy, Nadimul Haque, Madan Mitra, Biman Banerjee, Mahua Moitra, and Kunal Ghosh.
Chandrima has also been named West Bengal TMC president, while Sobhandeb is listed as Leader of the West Bengal Assembly.
The move comes a day after a rebel faction within the party convened a special session in Kolkata and announced a parallel organisational structure. The dissident group elected senior MLA Arup Roy as party chairperson, directly challenging the authority of Mamata and Abhishek.
The faction, led by Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee, claimed that the step was necessitated by a “constitutional crisis” within the party, arguing that the tenure of the existing national working committee, formed in February 2022, had expired.
The rebel camp stated that its special session was conducted in accordance with the party’s constitution and announced a new national working committee along with fresh office-bearers. It also indicated that the proceedings would be formally communicated to the Election Commission. However, the Mamata camp rejected the move, with senior leader Kunal Ghosh asserting that the dissidents lacked the authority to convene such a session or alter the party’s organisational structure.
The internal rift within the TMC has deepened in recent days, with both sides claiming legitimacy and support from party legislators. While the rebel faction has asserted backing from a significant number of MPs and MLAs, the party leadership maintains that the dissidents have no organisational standing.
