South Africa: Twelve killed in Johannesburg mass shooting; suspects at large | World
As many as 12 people lost their lives in a late-night mass shooting at an informal settlement in Johannesburg, South Africa. The attack occurred at the Jumpers Informal Settlement in the Cleveland area. According to police, a group of more than 10 armed suspects carried out the shooting before escaping from the scene.
Investigators said the attackers entered the settlement through two different access points. They then moved through the area and opened fire on residents and other community members at several locations within the settlement.
The gunmen fled in a vehicle after the attack, leaving multiple victims dead. According to police, the victims included nine men and three women. Eleven were pronounced dead at the scene, while the remaining victim succumbed to injuries after being taken to the hospital.
Emergency services and police officers responded to the scene soon afterwards. Authorities have launched a manhunt to trace and arrest those responsible. Police are continuing their investigation and are working to establish the motive behind the deadly incident.
Notably, informal settlements in South Africa are unplanned residential areas usually made up of shacks or similar structures.
Ten killed in mass shooting in Puebla
Earlier, a deadly shooting in Mexico’s central state of Puebla left ten people dead, highlighting growing concerns over escalating violence linked to organised crime in the region. The attack took place in Tehuitzingo, a town in eastern Puebla, where a group of armed men opened fire, according to state authorities. Officials said all the victims died from gunshot wounds.
The Puebla Public Security Secretariat reported that the victims included six men, three women and a child. Investigators have launched an inquiry into the killings, although no details about possible suspects have been released.
The latest incident adds to a series of violent attacks that have shaken Puebla in recent months. In February, six people were killed in the municipality of Huehuetlan El Grande. Just days later, three more people lost their lives in Puebla city when gunmen attacked their vehicle.
Authorities have warned that central Mexico is facing a significant rise in violence linked to criminal cartels. The worsening security situation has reportedly forced between 800 and 1,000 families to leave their homes, raising concerns about further displacement and instability in affected communities.
