Actor and Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, Kamal Haasan, has expressed his appreciation for the resolution unanimously passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly for the singing of the state song, Tamil Thaai Vazhthu, to come first at all official and public meetings.
Kamal Haasan, who heads the Makkal Needhi Maiam, termed it as a heartening and commendable step and stressed that it is essential for Tamil Nadu to hold its ground on the issue of safeguarding its constitutional rights and identity. Posting on social media, he has stated that the trend of not conceding to state rights should go on seamlessly.
The resolution, adopted on Monday, August 10, reiterates a well-established tradition which has its roots in a government notification made in November 1970, as well as the official recognition of the song as the state song in December 2021. The Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay was thankful to various opposition parties such as Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), and the Congress for their unanimous support in passing this resolution.
While making a resolution in the Assembly, Vijay stated that Tamil is much more than a language. Vijay called Tamil a common thought, culture, and emotion in the area. According to him, granting top priority to the state song is the greatest respect to Mother Tamil and is an essential exercise of state rights.
Adoption of the resolution is in line with the recent notice issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs in the Union Government about the hierarchy of national anthems and incorporating Vande Mataram in the public ceremonies. The invocation is deeply rooted in history, originating from Manonmaniam, the play written by the scholar Manonmaniam Sundaranar in 1891.
