Bank holiday today: On April 29, 2025 banks in Shimla will be closed on account of Bhagvan Shri Parshuram Jayanti, as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines. Banks in other parts of the country will be open.
Customers must note that banks in some parts of the country will be closed on April 29, April 30 and May 1.
Bank holiday on April 29 – Bhagwan Shri Parshuram Jayanti
Bhagwan Shri Parshuram Jayanti is a Hindu festival commemorating the birth anniversary of Lord Parshuram, the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu. This festival falls in the Hindu month of Vaisakha, typically in April or May. Parshuram Jayanti is typically celebrated in Himachal Pradesh, where Sri Renuka Ji is considered his birthplace.
Bank holiday on April 30 – Basava Jayanti/Akshaya Tritiya
Banks across Bengaluru will be closed on Wednesday, April 30 on account of Basava Jayanti and Akshaya Tritiya. Basava Jayanti celebrates the birth anniversary of the 12th-century philosopher, poet, and social reformer Basavanna. This festival is majorly celebrated by Lingayats, particularly in Karnataka.
Akshaya is an auspicious Hindu festival celebrated on the third day of the month of Vaishakha. On this day, it is believed that starting a new venture or investment brings prosperity and good luck.
Bank holiday on May 1 – Banks closing of accounts/ Sarhul
Banks across major cities of the country, except Aizwal, Raipur, Shillong, and Shimla, will close on Thursday, May 1. Additionally, banks in Ranchi are scheduled to be closed because of Sarhul, a tribal festival typically celebrated in Jharkhand. It means “worship of the Sal tree”, part of the Sarna faith.
When are banks closed?
Customers must note that bank holidays vary across the country according to different states based on regional and national festivals. Apart from festivals, banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays and all Sundays. Hence, customers should check the list of holidays with their nearest bank branch.
