India plans LNG storage boost, a pipeline tariff surcharge to support

Around 55% of India’s LPG imports were sourced from West Asia and routed through the Strait of Hormuz before the war.
Natural gas imports stood at $13.4 billion in FY26, according to commerce ministry data, of which Qatar accounted for about 42%. In FY27, Qatar accounts for about 3.8% of LNG imports. Currently, natural gas comprises of 6% India’s energy basket, and the government aims to raise its share to 15% by 2030.

Currently, the US is the top supplier of LNG to India, resulting in a higher import bill because of longer voyage times and higher freight charges.
