Mamata targets defectors, BJP at fiery July 21 rally amid TMC split

Launching a sharp and combative attack from the July 21 ‘Martyrs’ Day’ rally, Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday targeted both defectors from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP, signalling an escalation in the political battle following the party’s recent split. Without naming him directly, Mamata described the faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee as the BJP’s “B-team,” alleging that the breakaway group was indirectly aiding the saffron party under the guise of forming a separate political platform.

“We are better off; the thieves are moving to the BJP. There is no need to act as a mere prop for them—join the BJP directly. The students and youth of our party will take your places,” she said, in a clear message to those who have left the party.

The chief minister then turned her focus to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, accusing the current dispensation of engaging in political maneuvers to weaken the TMC rather than maintaining law and order.

Issuing a veiled warning, she said, “If I open my mouth, I will tear off the mask and reveal everything you did during your years in TMC.”

Her remarks echoed an earlier statement made shortly after the Assembly elections, when she had reminded Adhikari of his long tenure within the TMC, during which he held key ministerial and organisational responsibilities. Reiterating that sentiment, Mamata suggested she was fully aware of his past role within the party.

The strong remarks came as the TMC observed its annual July 21 rally for the first time since the party’s fragmentation, making this year’s event markedly different from previous editions. While Mamata addressed supporters at a rally near the Birla Planetarium, the rival faction led by Ritabrata organised a parallel programme at Mayo Road, underscoring the visible split within the party.

Reasserting her leadership and the legitimacy of her camp, Mamata declared, “We are the real Trinamool. Merely putting up a signboard does not make a party. A few leaders have left, but the grassroots workers remain with us.”

Taking a final swipe at defectors, she added, “We no longer need you. May you prosper in wealth, honour, and health. The new struggle will be waged with the new generation.”

Political observers believe Mamata’s aggressive tone at the rally — her first major address since the split — has further intensified the ongoing political confrontation, both within the TMC and with the BJP, setting the stage for a sharper contest in the days ahead.
