Lone Left MLA Mustafizur inducted into CPI(M) state committee
In an organisational move following the recent Assembly election results, the CPI(M) has inducted its lone MLA in the West Bengal Assembly, Mustafizur Rahman Rana, as an ‘Invited Member’ of the party’s State Committee.
Rana, who secured a victory from Domkal in Murshidabad, emerged as the sole Left representative in the Assembly, giving the party a voice in the legislature after a major electoral setback. Party insiders view his induction into the State Committee— CPI(M)’s highest decision-making body at the state level—as both a recognition of his electoral success and a strategic step for the party’s future.
The decision was taken during a two-day state committee meeting held at Alimuddin Street headquarters, which began on Tuesday. The meeting is primarily focused on reviewing the party’s performance in the recently concluded Assembly elections. Sources said district committees submitted detailed reports analysing vote shares, results, and organisational shortcomings before the leadership finalised Rana’s induction. As part of the same reshuffle, Monalisa Sinha, state secretary of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), was also inducted into the committee.
According to party sources, the district reports highlighted not only the reasons behind the electoral debacle but also pointed to emerging opportunities. The reports suggest that internal conflicts and fragmentation within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have led to a renewed interest in the Left at the grassroots level, particularly in minority-dominated regions.
Against this backdrop, the CPI(M) leadership is expected to project Rana as a key face of the party in the coming months. Leaders believe his victory in Murshidabad positions him as an effective representative in districts with significant minority populations. Plans are reportedly underway to place him at the forefront of major political campaigns and outreach programmes across the state.
Political observers view Rana’s elevation as a strategic move by the CPI(M) to rebuild its organisational strength and re-establish its presence in the state’s political landscape.
