India and the European Union have taken a crucial step forward, deciding to finalise their Free Trade Agreement by the end of 2025. This agreement aims to strengthen their partnership in various areas, including trade, mobility, technology, and investment. By making it easier for businesses to exchange goods and services, simplifying travel and migration, collaborating on innovation and digital transformation, and encouraging investments in each other’s economies, this agreement is expected to boost economic growth, create jobs, and increase opportunities for businesses and individuals in both India and the EU.

India and UK discuss Free Trade Agreement in February meet

Before the European Commission team’s visit, the UK’s Minister of State for Trade Policy, Douglas Alexander, met with India’s Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, on February 24. The next day, February 25, officials from India and the UK resumed their discussions on a free trade agreement.

India-US bilateral trade talks: Latest developments

The India-US bilateral trade discussions are ongoing, with the Commerce Minister recently concluding a US tour from March 4 to 6. During this visit, Mission 500 was a major topic of discussion, focusing on enhancing bilateral trade. Notably, India’s gold imports from the US amounted to $2.3 billion.

Currently, an analysis of the impact of tariffs is underway, and discussions on imposing safeguard duties on steel continue. These talks aim to strengthen trade ties and address key issues between the two nations. 

Updates on India’s ongoing Free Trade Agreements (FTAs)

India-European Union (EU) FTA

  • A meeting on the progress of FTA negotiations was held on 27th February 2025 in New Delhi. It was co-chaired by India’s Commerce Secretary and the European Commission’s Director General (Trade).
  • A high-level meeting took place in Mumbai on 1st March 2025 to review the FTA discussions.
  • The 10th round of negotiations will be held in Brussels from 10th to 14th March 2025.

India-United Kingdom (UK) FTA

  • Significant progress has been made in resolving issues related to goods and services.
  • A key discussion was held on 24th February 2025 with the UK’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade.

India-United States (USA) Trade Agreement

India’s Commerce and Industry Minister visited the USA from the 4th to the 6th of March 2025.
The visit focused on following up on the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), which was agreed upon during the India-USA leaders’ meeting on 13th February 2025 in Washington.
