Instagram down? Thousands report issues accessing social media platform, frustrated netizens say ‘whole thing is broken’

Social media platform Instagram is facing issues with hundreds of users reporting problems accessing the platform. On the outage tracking website Downdetector, there have been over 10,000 reports about issues with accessing the platform with the spike peaking at around 8:59 AM India time.

Downdetector monitors outages by aggregating status reports from several sources, including user-submitted complaints, meaning the actual number of affected users may differ.

The issue with accessing Instagram could be more severe in the US where the over 10,000 reports have been registered on Downdetector while in India there is a spike but only around 100 complaints have been registered on the platform.

There are also around 170 reports of issues with Instagram on Downdetector in the UK, with the spike peaking in at around 9:11AM India time.

71% of the complaints were related to problems with accessing the Instagram app, 19% said the issue was related to server connection and 5% of users reported issues with accessing Feed or timeline.

Notably, Meta is yet to release a formal statement addressing the technical issues or providing a timeline to fix them. The technical issues at Instagram also don’t seem to be following other Meta owned social media properties like Facebook, Threads and WhatsApp.

Facebook had also faced a massive outage last week with over 11,000 reports on Downdetector.

Meanwhile, Reddit forums have been filled with multiple posts of users complaining about not being able to access their DMs on Instagram. While users earlier thought it may be an app-related issue, multiple complaints about the blank screen on the DMs tab suggest that the problem could be server-side.

“Around two hours ago, my message page didn’t show any messages at all, even though I have plenty, and I got two notifications earlier.” wrote a user in the Instagram subreddit.

“My messages, my contacts on Instagram, I can’t use the search tool or even scroll up! The whole thing is just broken right now,” wrote another user.

“I came on insta to dm my friend and i can still message but the theme we had is no longer there and after asking her, all the themes on her other dms are gone as well,” added another user.

“me and my boyfriend are long distance right now and my favorite part of the day is our phone calls and sending each other reels. i am annoyed right now” added yet another user
