Google reveals I/O 2026 dates as Sundar Pichai arrives in India: Check dates and what to expect

Google has announced the dates for its I/O 2026 summit just as its top officer Sundar Pichai landed in India to attend the AI Impact Summit 2026. Earlier in the day, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis gave a keynote address on Day 3 of the AI summit.

When is I/O 2026?

Google I/O is all set to be held from 19 to 20 May at the company’s Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. Just like every year, Google will also be live-streaming its flagship developer conference, where it has confirmed that the latest breakthroughs in the field of AI, Android and its other products will be announced.

No hardware launches are expected at the I/O conference, as the event is likely to centre around software-related announcements.

“The event will feature keynote addresses from Google leaders, fireside chats, product demos and more. While you wait for the big day, check out this year’s save-the-date experience, where you can play, create and remix your way through a playground of experiences built with Gemini,” Google revealed in its blog post.

Pichai also confirmed the dates in a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he wrote, “See you all at Google I/O starting May 19th! http://io.google”

Shortly after landing in India, Pichai also met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the AI Impact Summit.

What to expect from I/O 2026?

While Google has already launched its Gemini 3 Pro and Flash models recently, it is likely that the company will unveil new Gemini-related innovations, especially a new AI video generation model. Notably, the company had launched its Veo 3 video generation model at I/O last year with support for generating synchronised audio as well, and the AI-generated videos had then slowly started taking over the internet.

Meanwhile, the company had also introduced Deep Think mode in Gemini, Image 4 image model, a new series of Gemma 3 open-source models and new innovations inside Google Search.

The first beta for Android 17 has already been released, but it is likely that Google will fully showcase all the biggest new features of the UI at the I/O 2026 event. This includes the new Handoff features, Desktop Mode, a ‘Liquid Glass’-like redesign along with deeper Gemini integrations in the OS.

The company is also expected to unveil some big AI upgrades to the Google Chrome browser, which has slightly begun to lag behind the competition, especially with the rise of agentic AI browsers like ChatGPT Atlas and Perplexity Comet, among others.
