Trump warns as US strikes ISIS strongholds in Syria
US President Donald Trump has announced a major retaliatory response against ISIS following the recent killing of American personnel in Syria. In a statement, the President confirmed that the United States is carrying out powerful strikes on key ISIS strongholds across the country.
Trump announces serious retaliation against ISIS
“Because of ISIS’s vicious killing of brave American Patriots in Syria, whose beautiful souls I welcomed home to American soil earlier this week in a very dignified ceremony, I am hereby announcing that the United States is inflicting very serious retaliation, just as I promised, on the murderous terrorists responsible,” Trump said in a social media post.
While acknowledging the ongoing challenges in Syria, the President emphasised that eliminating ISIS could pave the way for a brighter future in the war-torn nation. “We are striking very strongly against ISIS strongholds in Syria, a place soaked in blood which has many problems, but one that has a bright future if ISIS can be eradicated,” he said.
Trump also highlighted the support of the Syrian government in stabilising the region, noting that its leadership is “working very hard to bring greatness back to Syria.”
Issuing a stark warning to terrorist groups, the President added, “All terrorists who are evil enough to attack Americans are hereby warned — YOU WILL BE HIT HARDER THAN YOU HAVE EVER BEEN HIT BEFORE IF YOU, IN ANY WAY, ATTACK OR THREATEN THE U.S.A.”
Why did the US retaliate against ISIS?
As per IANS, the airstrikes are in response to an attack over the past weekend close to Palmyra, resulting in the deaths of two US Army personnel and one US civilian interpreter, as well as the injuries of three other US soldiers.
The assailant opened fire on a group of American and Syrian troops and was subsequently killed by the forces. White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly stated that the actions of the US military were in line with the president’s promise: “President Trump declared that the United States would take revenge on ISIS for killing our heroes in Syria, and he is doing just that.”
