The gold card scheme replaces the existing EB-5 visa program, which was started in 1990.

The EB-5 program granted US residency to foreigners if they made a minimum investment of $1,050,000 (Rs 9.15 crore) or $800,000 (Rs 6.98 crore) for economically distressed areas.

The EB-5 program has long drawn criticism due to allegations of abuse and fraud with businesses, including those linked to Trump’s family members, using it to fund their property developments.

Trump said that the gold card will provide the privileges of a green card. He said that the gold card would be the route to American citizenship. The US president also suggested that the wealthy people would come to the US by buying the gold card.
